I have a 1994 Ford Ranger with a 2.3 4 cylinder motor. I have been having some problems starting it. With the first turn of the key, it usually will fire right up. After I turn it off, though, it has difficulty starting and sometimes takes up to eight or nine tries. My buddy came over to take a look at it and got it to start every time by cranking a few seconds longer than I had been. Is this normal for a ranger or should I be concerned? Is it a possibility that I need to replace something in the ignition system?

I would test your coils with an ohm meter first while they are cold then again once they are warmed up from running and compare the readings. Your coils may be getting old.

Also it may be time for a general tune up. Plugs and wires, fuel and air filters.

Plugs, wires, DIS module, and air filter I know have been replaced recently. I don't know about the fuel filter though.
