Ignition cylinder removal

I'm new to the forums and want to say thanks in advance for any help I get.

The problem I have is the key cylinder is stuck in the steering column and I have tried everything I know and even went to my mechanic and tried everything he suggested to get it out to no avail. I would like to add it has been sitting for 23 years so I don't have the key for it.

Assuming its a first gen...

I hsd to do this on my 87 ranger....

Remove all the plastic BS surronding the cylinder. Youll see a tiny hole on the bottom of the cylinder houseing.

Inside thst hole is a tiny pin that is attached to the cylinder.

Take a very tiny (cant remember the size off hand) drill bit and drill out the little pin. But you have to be precise so you dont hog out the hole for the pin.

Once you drill the pin out give a good yank on the cylinder, you may need pliers btt itll come right out.

Installing the new cylinder is easy, just turn the key to the on position and the little pin will then push in, line the end of the cylinder up with the piece inside the column and shove the cylinder into place, then turn key to off and make sure new pin is in the houseing hole.

89/90 BIIs are pry the same but im not sure.

So I've took the column appart and drilled out the little pin out and that sucker is locked in there like a tick on a deers butt and to top it off the ears on the cylinder snapped off so now I have nothing to pull the cylinder out by. I have hotwired it to verify that it turns over and has spark. But how do I get the cylinder out so it don't look like I'm stealing my bronco II. Thanks again

The pin isn't all that holds it in. The end has a "pawl" that only matches to the hole it goes through in the run position.

This picture shows it well:

You will need to take a 1/2 inch drill bit and punch the tumblers out so the lock can turn freely.

The Focuses had lots of issues with the lock cylinders and the tumblers hanging up. I've had to do this one or two hundred times.

sorry for not updating for the past few days my neighbor didnt have a drill that would accept a 1/2 inch bit so i hot wired it and it runs on starting fluid. i took fuel rail off and injectors out and cleaned them to the best of my abilities and replace fuel pump ( its wired in separately pulling fuel from an auxiliary fuel tank) and still nothing. I have fuel in the rail and power to the injector plugs. the only thing that i havent checked is the tfi module and the inertia switch could either of those cause a no start problem. thanks for the help so far

Both of those can cause a no start.

But since it runs on ether it has spark and we can rule out the TFI.

We can also rule out the inertia switch since theres fuel at the rail.

Whats the pressure at the rail?

No idea man I don't have a way of testing the fuel pressure and being out of work right now I can't buy/rent a test guage. With that being said when I had the fuel rail off and injectors off I made my own pulse testor and all 6 had a decent spray pattern
This has really got me scratching my head I may have tore an o ring when installing the injectors into the fuel rail other than that I have no idea why it won't start.
If you have any ideas I'm game to try anything to get it running.

Unfourtantly testing fuel pressure is the only way to diagnose this.

If the pressures to low then it wont run, if the pressures good you got an wireing issue with the injectors.

Post the problem over in the 2.9 forum....youll get alot better answers.

Go down to Lowes. They have a 1/2 cobalt bit on a 1/4 hex shank. It sounds hinky, but I've drilled 1/4 plate out with it and it hasn't broken yet.

Adsm08 I don't have a way of going anywhere and being out of work currently I can't pay anyone to take me
