Ignition Cylinder problem.

My newest problem started yesterday. When I turned my key to start the truck it started but when I released the key it died. At first I thought it was some kind of big vaccuum leak but I found nothing wrong under the hood. When I checked further I found I could start the truck and hold the key to keep it running. If I am very careful the key wil stay in the proper position to keep the truck running. Unfortunately if I hit a bump or something it makes the key slip and the engine dies. Has anyone experienced this? I'm guessing I probably need a new cylinder but thought I would ask here first. Thanks for anyhelp you can give. 1988 Ranger xlt

It's probably the ignition switch, not the key and lock. My 85 did the exact same thing and I found that the switch was cracked. It's located on the steering column.

Ignition switch is a good bet. It can also be that your not getting power to the coil while the switch is in run mode due to a wiring issue. I'm going to guess that your '88 is not a dual spark motor, correct?

My 88 ranger xlt the same thing, replaced the switch that bolts to the top of the steering column under the dash, you will need to drop the column to get at it, that will fix it.

I dropped the lower shroud and see a slider switch attached to the column. It seemed loose and when I messed with it, it fell apart and a piece fell out. So I stuck the piece back in a taped it up for now... Is this the ignition switch? THANKS.

So now what tool do I use to get that sucker off there? It appears to have hex bolts with a peg in the middle... Thanks.

It's a torx bolt. They call them anti theft bolts. You can go to Autozone or Kragens and they should have one in there tool section. Just tell them what your taking apart and they will point you in the right direction.
