I Need More Power!!

Seems like a colossal waste. An 09!!! The 2.3 is a good engine and it has been in the Ranger a long time. It takes a little time to get used to I had this on my 98 and was a little disappointed in it at first, but after a while I learned to manage it and it was just fine. Very economical and never missed a beat.

Suggest you standby for a bit before messing with it.

I have the 4.0 in my 08 and it chugs along in traffic at 45mph just like everybody else with lesser or greater engines. Just uses more gas to do the same job than my ol' 98.

your '98 should have had a 2.5. either way, it was a lima engine rated nearly 30HP LESS than the OPs duratec 2.3. kind of comparing apples to oranges IMO.

trade it in on a truck with a 4.0. it puts out 210HP from the factory.

seriously, didnt you notice the lack of power when you test drove it? if it didnt have enough power, why didnt you turn it down and get something with more juice? im not try to critizise...just seems odd.

that said, the 2.3 duratec has been boosted. check out the focus crowd...they do it from time to time.

Or 262hp from the xterra...:D

the xterra also weighs in at a full 1,000lbs more than a 4wd ranger....giving the SOHC ranger a better power-to-weight ratio.

Hello everyone. I am brand new to the forum and a brand new 09 Ranger owner!! I love my new truck. Came out of a Nissan Xterra and am soooo glad I made the switch to a Ranger!

I have a lot of learning to do about the truck though. My new baby is only a week old. It has only 400 miles on it. So once I get it broken in, I want to start adding some power to it. It's just the little 2.3L four cylinder with a 5spd. tranny. Any ideas on how to increase some power that doesnt cost a ton of $$ and can be done by a shade-tree mechanic like myself??

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

Nitrous, that WILL give you power, I recomend the lowest setting and this kit:

:)

you can piece one together cheaper. but if you ever get nitrous or even talk about nitrous do not, DO NOT, ever call it NOS (naws). that is the most fucking annoying thing to hear. i swear the fast and the furious has done more to hurt the american car industry than gas shortages and spiking insurance rates in the 70s combined.

It's a manual tranny, so you've got a good start.

First thing you need to do is get past break-in period, then really learn how it drives best. Once you get shifts figured out and timed right, youll start to realize how damn peppy a 2.3 really is. It will surprise you how much more power is hiding in there. Alot of an engine's power is lost in the tranny if the shifts dont compliment the powerband.

Once you start to become "one with the vehicle", and might still want a little more pep, get a programmer since it's so new, and re-gear the rear axle.

my dad has a 2.3 in his 08 escape gets 31MPG rated for only 28 but that little engine surprised the hell out of me power wise compared to my 2.5 which i LOVED and it had a lot of pep if shifted correctly, the duratec23 is a great 4cyl.
