i have a 97 ranger with a 2.3 and the thing is in desperate need of more power any idea other than a turbo

You could regear your differential or put in a bigger motor.

Not a lot you can do without internal motor mods and $$$$

internal mods are possible, i just want to try to keep it n/a

I'm curious why?

Never messed with one how complicated would it be to put one on my truck, what would be needed, and are there any cars i could get one for cheap off of?

There is quite a bit of info on the main TRS page. They're not so much complicated as uncommon, and that causes a lot of people to be afraid of them.

To get any reasonable amount of power from a 4 banger it takes money and skill, im not trying to say your poor and dumb, Im just trying to state the facts.

If you consider how much money you'd spend porting the head, getting bigger valves and injectors, adding a cam, and maybe a larger TB to make your non-forced induction engine crank out a mere 30-75 HP more than it has...and compare that to simply adding some forged pistons with a mild overbore maybe and the computer/turbo that is going to give you anywhere from 50-150 more HP, I think the choice would be easy...you may want to still do the head mods and injectors also so you can bump up the boost though.

I've seen a few references to turbo-charging for less than $2,000...I've already spent $600 on the head alone just to give my carbed Ranger 10 more HP...

Mine cost me about $1200 to do the swap after I sold off all the stuff I didn't need from the turbo coupe I scrapped. And mine is much better than a stock turbo coupe. Of course I did do all the work myself.

Swapping the electronics is much easier than most people think. There are only about 6-10 different wires (depending on what other options you want like electric fan control, etc) from the turbo coupe to a 2.3 ranger.

Then again your's is a 97 so you'd keep the stock electronics have it dyno tuned once you got all the mechanical parts put together.

But yeah for $2000 you can make a lot of turbo horsepower with a 2.3.
