I hate ACER!!

Computers are junk, a lot of times it will be hit and miss if it's dependable. I have an old PC, I just upgrade major stuff with used parts from people who are selling them cheap (obsolete but work). Retro fitted pre-built machines in to difference cases, upgraded cases AT -> ATX, whatever, the shit is easy compared to a vehicle assembly wise. Sometimes problems intermittent hardware problems are hard to diagnose though. Hardware isn't "acer" or "dell" or "gateway", but is typically bottom of the barrel stuff.

This. Actually the majority of all motherboards are made by a few OEM's.

And brand name doesn't have alot to do with it, the price range you buy does. the $400 pc has crappier parts than the the $700 pc most of the time, but really the only parts that make a good pc from a crappy one are the motherboard and PSU, the rest is pretty much the same if you by a prebuilt vs build your own. My wife's pc is my moms old ACER which the motherboard died (not knocking ACER, even the most expensive, best quality boards can die). I took all the parts and added my old motherboard and a cheap video card (no onboard on the motherboard) and now she has a nice, now overclockable, pc that is still 90% ACER.

I gotta say, if you are in the market for a desktop computer, write down what you want/need it to do. then do some research and buy the parts and build it yourself. you will come out with a better quality computer than what you would get from the brand names.

Laptops, there was an article a few weeks ago that did a quality comparison and they found that HP laptops were the worst, ASUS laptops were the best. And even the ASUS had somewhere around 10 percent dying after a few years. (HP had 25%)

The one thing that I have noticed on some of my old computers that have had components go bad is the common denominator is heat. bottom line, if your computer gets hot, bad things happen. make sure you have adequate cooling for the computer and adequate airflow around the computer itself.

of course that all does not matter when you leave the computer on in an upstairs bedroom in the middle of the summer and forget to turn on the A/C before going to work...

Another thing that was touched on is you get what you pay for. sure you can slap a 40 dollar motherboard and a 19 dollar powersupply and make a running computer, but you are very likely to have that computer choke and die on you too.

Just my $.02

Oh here is the article on the laptops:

Acer aint the worst, but it is down there...

again also notice that if you get the premium notebook, your chances of dying are a little better

YES... build it yourself if you can. its not hard and if you go with good reputable brands then you generally end up with a pc that will last. and it wont have all that crap software installed when you first start it...

We've never had a computer fail in our house and we've had 3 Dell's (2 desktops, 1 laptop that is over 5 years old and was constantly used until last summer), 1 Asus (my laptop that I got last summer, haven't dropped it or anything, but so far, so good), 2 Sony's (1 desktop, 1 laptop that fell out of a truck and still works perfectly), 1 Averatec (dropped on hardwood floor from over 4 feet while powered on and still works, though some keys on the keyboard have stopped working), and 2 custom builts, which have been the worst so far (both work, though), but that was the builder's fault.

So you could say we have been lucky with our computers, but who knows...

My first computer we bought after we got married in '95. It was Windows 3.1 on it and a P75 with a 540M drive and 8M or RAM. It was thousands of dollars. I have the receipt somewhere. It was a Packard Bell. Thing is, it still works. It's like a Buick Electra 225. It's heavy as hell and the case is very sturdy. I think basic durability has been compromised by making things thinner and lighter and cheaper. I could smash my gateway into rubbish with the old Packard Bell, then plug it in and surf the web on it. And it is running XP, by the way. It's slow, but steady.

I really should have re-worded my title. to " I Hate this acer Motherboard"

Almost every problem i've had with this computer if due to the ACER-made motherboard in this computer. I would even take an Asus board of this POS lol.

My last PCIe slot just died, yay. Nvidia 780 board on the way, problem solved.

I will say this Acer case is by far the nicest to work with. Everything just snaps in and out, changing drives is so simple.

and to the one who said computer manufactures don't make the parts inside. Sometimes they do, my motherboard for example, or older dells ( some new ones) that you can only replace your drives or PSU with a Dell unit because they make their own with special connectors. But your right the only thing acer actually made is my case and my motherboard, everything else inside is various other brands.

They still didn't make the parts, they specified to the maker what they want.

Asus "good" boards, are the ones they build to Nvidia specs, and they ARE really good design. Crap quality though. Not to mention they have terrible customer service and do everything to get out of warranty repairs.

BFG on the other hand, Is amazing, I had my computer overheat and fry my video card ( totally my fault) and they are still Standing behind their lifetime warranty. A new one is on the way. BFG also makes NForce ( Nvidia spec) mother boards.

Wow, does this bring back a memory:

I was building a computer once back in the mid-90s, and sent my wife to the supply house for a hard drive, with strict injunction against spending more than $259 for a 250 MB drive.

You can regularly find 1TB drives under $120 now...

you get what you pay with computers (in my opinion) my grandpa and grandma had an ACER and i swear they sent that thing off once a year. btw, dont they sell those at walmart? there's you're first strike, never under any circumstances buy anything from walmart.

i've had a IBM laptop for 5 years now, that was top of the line in 05 when i got it and it still works great. i run the complete Adobe creative suite, rendering programs and 3d modeling softeware and have never had a problem with it....except the battery, its worn out

HP, Mac's, Toshiba, Acer, Compaq and others are sold at my Walmart

They sell the same toys as KB toys, the same tires are Discount tire and Les Schwab.

So whats wrong with Walmart?
