its a 94 explorer 4x4 auto. I hit the 4hi switch and it clicks in and works but then i hit the 4 low switch and nothing. its push button not a dial/switch. any thoughts?

Do you have the auto in neutral with your foot on the brake when you try shifting into 4low? It won't shift into low with the vehicle in gear.

i think i have tried that before but my rear brakes arent hooked up would that be the problem. would it work in park?

IIRC, it doesn't work with it being in park, has to be neutral.

Correct... Reason being is even though there is no setting for "Neutral" on our 4WD switches, the transfer case DOES have a neutral setting which it has to pass through in order to go from 4H to 4L. Therefore if the vehicles was in park on a hill, when you shifted and it got to neutral it would roll out of control.

I had a 93xploder a while back(junk tranny) but going into 4 high it would be fine, but going into 4 low it would click into 4 low then make a loud grind and pop itself back into 2wd. Sorry this doesnt help but what the others are saying is correct, must be in neutral and have your foot on the brake and it should go in.
