I don't want to turn off my radio to shut off the engine

Get the job done, correctly, the first time. There's beer to be had.
It's pretty much in the title. I wish I didn't have to kill electrical power to everything to shut the engine down. Accessory mode being one click back on the ignition cylinder instead of right behind ignition on stinks.

It'd be great if it was at position 3. I don't want to sit idling while I finish listening to my song.

Yes, I know it's trivial but I had to complain about a truck built 28 years ago. 😁

That's all.

You should be able to roll the key slightly back towards the off position to where the engine shuts down but without killing interior electrical power, then forward to the run position.

This. I have used this method for as long as I have been driving which is creeping up to the 40 year mark.

not sure when automakers changed it so that you can turn the car off and remove the key and the radio plays until you open the door, but I think it was the late 90s. my 97 unfortunately does not have that feature but I really liked it in my previous three cars.

That's "Retained Accessory Power"; I'm not sure exactly when it came in, either. It is neat to have.

You can add that feature, with three relays and two diodes (assuming your '97 has positive switching dome lights like the older ones).

My 2011 escape keeps on radio after shutting the engine, but only for 10 minutes.

It will take a 10 minute timer. Simply wire the stereo directly to the battery (w/ fuse), interrupt that 12 Vdc supply with the timer. It needs to see an ignition "OFF" voltage to then enable, starting the countdown. The timer also requires a ground connection. 12 VDC countdown timer

That's the easy way. I just Googled and found a bunch of very versatile timer modules that would do this, all for less than $20.

There are several different ways to accomplish this. All but one of them involves cutting up the factory wiring in some way.
The easiest way is to let the truck idle for 1 more minute until the song ends. Without going too deep into the math…
The BSFC of a 4L is about .5-.6
Using that estimate, I’d say your burning about .5-.7 gallons of fuel per hour at idle. Simple estimating tells me you’ll burn about 1 oz of fuel per minute.

64oz in a gallon? Works out to ~5¢ per oz at $3/gal.

I'll be darned. It works. Thanks!

All you need is a "Ignition ON" wire, the rest of the added wiring has nothing to do with the factory wiring. It's all new.
