I am repalcing the heads on my 2004 Vulcan

I just did this over Christmas. All my expereience was from 30 years ago on carb motored V8 muscle cars. It took me about 40 hours including the cam syncro and waterpump. There are a lot of things hanging on that motor and I was worried about getting it all back together but it wasn't that bad if you take lots of pictures. My tips are the fan clutch is reverdre threaded on the water pump and the fuel rail does not have to come off, you can swing it around out of the way. And get some spare exhaust manifold bolts off a taurus in the junk yard. Like anything, I could do it in half the time now. I had city motor supply in dallas do my heads. They were fine and only charged $200. I believe they ship.

Ok, time to get this done. My rejection sticker runs out last day in April. I have ordered the following from Rockauto. Should be here Friday

2 sets of felpro bolts $30
Felpro gasket set $60
mc stat $10

From Walmart

M1 oil abd MC filter $30
Prestone cool $25

From doverusa in Atlanta GA

2 rebuilt heads $280

Total $425

I found a local shop that is doing it for $500 labor. I will post when it is done with the results and hopefully pictures. Thanks for the help.

Ok, got the new heads installed and drove about 50 miles so far. So far so good. I was able to get the truck inspected :headbang: I stopped by the shop a few times to check on the progress. It is a pretty big job. He torn everything down including all of the serp belt pulley system etc. I did have to go to ford and get some exhaust manifold bolts to the tune of $75 for about 8 bolts. I gave them an extra $100 in labor $600 instead of the quote of $500. All told at the end I spent about $1,100 for the heads. Lets hope everything is OK!. Thanks for the help!!

PS The funny thing was, I inspected the valves and they did not look bad at all. I could not tell if the seat were off a little. there was a little lip of about 1/6" but I could not tell if that is how they were suppose to be because they are at an angle. Plus the #5 cylinder looked the same and that did not have a misfire. He thought maybe the valve was bent. Honestly I am not sure exactly what was wrong with the head!!

Too late now but you could have poured a little gasoline down the intake and exhaust chambers to see if it leaked out of valve seat.

They did flip the head over and pour gasoline in the chamber. Some gas did leak out of the valve seal. just not a lot. I meant to pour some in the other valves to see what they did, but I forgot. Are the valves suppose to be so tight that no gas would pass through?
