hypothetical questions

You replace the head of the hammer, you replace the handle, it's still your old hammer.

no need to..

check half way down the page, under 'how can i tell if my vehicle needs a vin'

http://www.icbc.com/registration-licensing/VIN

no, i mean i believe ya... there are very few, if anything, i've seen you post that seemed like a lie, so there's no reason to doubt that what you post isn't fact

You replace the head of the hammer, you replace the handle, it's still your old hammer.

precisely

or, you go to a restraunt, order a dish that comes with bottomless fries... at the end of your meal, you've had 3 refills, but it's still the same plate of fries...

I've read the entire post, and what I find most interesting is the bottomless fries. Where would one go to get these? Hypothetically speaking of course...

restaurant in canada called red robin, also a restaurant called montanas has bottomless ribs on wednesdays

But what do you have when you stick an old handle on an old head?

There is no easy answer...

To me IMO, the most important VIN would be the one on the dash. Frames age differently and some would be unreadable and some wouldn't be. Vehicles are reframed from wrecks too, I doubt they are retagged.

Engines come and go, I think that marking has more to do with making sure a vehicle VINed for a V8 gets a V8 rather than a four cylinder type of thing. This engine is slated for this vehicle...

Doors... my parents Explorer was sideswiped on the drivers side, insurance had the bodyshop stick a used door on it but with no sticker at all. I don't think they make reproduction decals anyway. They are a fairly commonly replaced collision part, I don't think they would be a reliable thing to mess with anyway.

A lot of locales are touchy about switching VIN tags on the dash too...

i'm simply stating what the registration laws are in british columbia-it's going to be one of those 'check your local ordinances' routines as laws vary by reigion.

here, from a legal standpoint, the moment any number is altered on the vehicle, that vehicle ceases to exist as a legal entity.to restore it's existence,an inspection must be done, and a new vin issued so it may be re-registered.

while these rules are not always followed,it's like any other crime.you're only ok till you get caught.and they can be kinda nasty about registration issues-they see it as giving the system the middle finger.

yes and no... i can't really see them making a big fuss about you changing a door though... unless the vin on that door happens to come back to a stolen vehicle... but even then... you could claim you took it off of a friend's part's car, which was later stolen

regardless... the law is black and white

So THAT'S why you go through all the trouble to change everything on a vehicle when you start to change one part! Needs a new alternator? Screw it, good excuse for a big block.

Gwaii is correct but just for the halibut... falk the rest of ya.:thefinger:

this is something i have always wondered...

say i buy an old 85 ranger 4x4, it's in rough shape, but it's a complete drivable vehicle... after driving it for a while, i notice the frame under the box, on the drivers side is pretty rusty, so i replace it with some channel steel, weld it all into place, a little down the line the box rusts out, so i put an 89 box on... then the passenger side of the frame rusts out, i replace it, cab rusts out, i put an 89 cab on it, the remaining section of the drivers side of the frame rusts out, so i put some more channel steel in there... now the motor goes, so i swap in a 5L with a t5, now i want to go full width running gear and a new tc, so i put that in there... get into a front end accident, so i replace the bumper, grill, headlights, hood and front fenders with 89 stuff, just to match the cab, rear bumper is pretty rusty by this point, so i replace it too...

thanks for posting my build thread...lol...

I didn't get through all the posts, but I read some good answers...but it really depends on your provincial laws...and in some cases even down to the municipality or region you live in...

I went to MTO and asked them what I had to do..this is what they told me...make a list of all the parts you used from all the vehicles and what is original equipment (if any)...go to a Notary Public and get a sworn statement that this is true to the best of your knowledge (or other legal lingo) and then get the truck inspected (this came out after) and saftied...then do the drive clean...

Then run ten miles carrying a camel (which are really hard to find in Ontario unless you like menthol)..then swim across lake Ontario with a shark tied to your back...etc...etc...they lost me at the Notary Public...I just made the list and they let me choose the VIN number (really!)...and it is classed as a Rebuilt Vehicle...

In your province they may just want you to make a cash donation to the ruling political party though...
