I'm in the process of replacing the fuel pump on my 2001 ford ranger with a walboro 255 pump but I ran into a problem with the plastic lock ring on the tank to get to the fuel pump. I can't seem to get this off. All the autoparts stores don't care a lock ring wrench. I can order one online but I really need to get my truck up and running. Any suggestions on how to get this off? Thanks!

I'd try a brass punch and a hammer to drive the lock ring. That's how we usually do them.

huge channel locks also work on the smaller ones.

if you use a punch and hammer be gentle or the plastic breaks

And a hint for getting it back on....put it in some boiling water for a bit to expand it....goes on much easier!

It's a whole bunch easier to get it back together with a new o-ring.

the reason for that is they intentionally make the O-ring from a material that swells when it comes in contact with gasoline, because it swelling makes for a tighter seal.

i bought a new one when i replaced my fuel pump, then i could just destroy the old one getting it off and not have to worry about saving it. mine was steel though, didnt know they went to plastic for the lock rings now.
