I’m sure there’s been a million threads on timing chain rattle, but I’d like some opinions that aren’t from reddit. Recently bought a 2011 XLT 4x4 manual at 147k miles - early on in my ownership it had startup rattle so I replaced both tensioners (OEM). Afterwards it started to rattle during idle, I found some plastic chunks in the oil so I know at least one of the guides is chewed up or gone. It sounds like it’s coming from the top of the intake manifold so i’m guessing the culprit is the rear passenger side chain. My question is how much time do I have? I’m moving states at the end of August (1200 mile trip), every shop in the city is booked out multiple weeks so i’m out of luck in that aspect. Don’t have the resources or time to pull the engine here but I will once I move. I do have a second vehicle that I need to sell in that time frame that i’ll be driving as long as I can. What should I do? Sell it ASAP? Will a chain snap or jump a tooth? Or will it keep rattling another 100k miles like some people have mentioned? It’s an essentially rust free truck that’ll be brought to Minnesota - it’s so damn clean underneath I don’t want to take a loss on it. I’ll include a video somehow.

Think about what a rattle might mean. What is the chain doing that could cause an issue. I’ve never owned a 4.0 or ran a 4.0 or rebuilt a 4.0, so I really wouldn’t know. I personally wouldn’t take a risk, you can rent a U-Haul pickup truck and a trailer, honestly, that should have been factored in during the purchase.
