My Ranger: 2011 XL standard cab, 6' box, 2.3L Duratec, automatic. Nickname: Plain Jane.

Just got the radiator flushed and new coolant fill at my local Ford dealership.

Noticed the new stuff is not the usual golden colour.

So I checked the invoice, which lists part VC13DLG ("Yellow"--although it looks slightly greenish to my eyes). Ford website says this coolant is not correct for my Ranger.

Checked invoice from previous coolant change, three years ago. That time, they used VC7D1LB2 ("Gold"), which Ford says is correct. And reading the fine print, it matches the specification no. in the Owners' Manual.

My question: is this a trivial mistake the technician made, or is it serious? Will using the Yellow rather than the Gold matter much?

Second question: would anyone here be kind enough to explain why it matters? I've done some searching online, but I've had trouble finding info specific to my case. And I don't want to roll the dice on AI.

I apologize if this is a dumb question.

I don't know all the specifics abput those exact coolants. But, generally, the different coolants are formulated with corrosion inhibitors for different metals that the coolant encounters in the system. They will all prevent boiling and freezing to roughly the same temperatures. But the wrong coolant could allow more corrosion and sludge buildup in the system. I think I would go back and show them the invoice and owners manual. A good shop will either correct it or show documantation, such as a Ford service bulletin, that says they interchange ok.

But, maybe someone here already has that info.

Take it back and make them put the correct stuff in, the yellow replaced the old orange stuff, gold and orange were not cross compatible the last i checked, that being said ford could have put something out saying that yellow replaces gold

The gold coolant had longer service life than the old green stuff but the two could be mixed, it just shortened the change interval. The Yellow coolant was introduced after I retired in 2017 so I'm not familiar with it. I'm assuming Ford has superseded gold with yellow but it's best to check.

Thank you for the replies! I'll take the truck back in today.

I was hoping the different coolant would be all right, so I could cross this off the "to-do" list. C'est la vie.

I'm interested to see what you find as well, because my truck's coolant appears to be a weird conglomeration of "cheapest available" and I'd like to know what Ford now recommends.

Update (warning TL;DR):

Went to the shop today, explained the situation.

It seemed to me that they got a bit cagey. At first, they said the Yellow superseded the old spec.

I told them that was fine, and asked for some documentation.

Then I spent quite a while in their waiting room, while the desk person and the parts manager tried to find some email or something. Which they couldn't.

I offered to show them what I had found out through my own efforts, but they didn't seem interested.

Then they told me that the Gold coolant is no longer available in Canada.

So I called up a different Ford dealership in the region. Their parts guy told me that the pre-diluted Gold is no longer supplied in Canada, but that the concentrated form is still available.

I left, and printed off a couple of pdfs from Motorcraft (links below.)

According to this chart, which is dated Oct. 2025, on p.2, the 2011 Ranger is coded "Y," which stands for Motorcraft Gold Antifreeze/Coolant (rather than "DY" which would mean the Yellow.)

n.b. Lil Work Truck, the 2008 Ranger is also coded for Gold on that chart.

Another thing is that the 2025 chart states clearly on p.4 that the concentrated Gold coolant is specified for Canada (CVC-7-B6.) Also, it shows that the Gold meets specification WSS-M97B51-A1, while the Yellow is a different spec (WSS-M97B57-A1, which is close but not the same.)

Then there is this note on the backward compatibility of Motorcraft Yellow:

It says that the Yellow replaces the Orange and the Green (but nothing about replacing the Gold.) Then it goes on to say:

"Important: Do not use Motorcraft® YellowAntifreeze/Coolant to service Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles factory-filled with any other Motorcraft®antifreeze/coolant. In the case of these vehicles, Motorcraft® Yellow Antifreeze/Coolant is not compatible and therefore is not approved for use. Continue to service these vehicles using only the correct recommended antifreeze/coolant."

Since the Gold is not Orange, nor is it Green, it would appear to me that the Yellow cannot be used in place of the Gold.

So I can't help but think they put the wrong stuff in my truck.

I went back to the shop that did the flush yesterday, and showed them these printouts. They were still looking for that email they said they got. But after I pointed out to them the paragraph that began with the word "Important," and after I told them the concentrated Gold is still available in Canada, they finally told me that they would look further into it, and get back to me tomorrow.

Okay. If they need a day to try to save face, I can live with it. For Pete's sake, I just want the right coolant in my truck. Why is this difficult?

I know that many of the contributors here are very knowledgeable. If you think I'm making too much fuss abut this issue, please let me know.

No. I think you're doing the right thing. Try to be patient and let them correct their mistake and learn from it. If they don't want to make it right and start giving you trouble, then you need to escalate the issue to a higher level. But, see if kindness and patience for another day wins out.
