'93 Ranger 4x4 was still running at 411,020 miles when I pulled it and swapped in a ~200,000 mile '95 motor after the clutch slave had finally soaked my disc and needed changing. The motor never needed much, just regular maintenance, alternator, starter, plug wires and one distributor. Went through a few trannies. Never anything more serious. That motor had ~169,000 on it when I bought the truck in '01 and always had a slight rod knock on a very cold start up, never got worse than that and never heard it in normal weather. It just ran and ran and ran. I'm rough on vehicles and this thing just kept going. I wouldn't have swapped it out yet except the disc was slipping too bad. It was finally starting to get a lil blow by at the PVC grommet but had no noticeable smoking even at start up. What a great lil motor!
I've been looking to "upgrade" the ignition to the '95 system but a mechanic just told me yesterday when I was getting the AC charged that the distributor is actually more reliable in the long haul and recommended leaving it set up as is.
