Do I want the gauge valve open or closed. It does not matter right. It would not surprise me if they were messed up. The first vacuum I rented had no oil, then the first set of gauges they rented me had the had valves cracked and missing.
Also Yesterday I noticed this because I heard a whining noise I think coming from the compressor, So I decided to put the gauges on it.
The gauges are on the "system" side of the valves, opening the valve would do nothing but release your refrigerant into the air if you don't have the center hose connected to something.
No cold air means something happened for sure. Sounds like you might have a leak still (or your compressor took a dump).
