How low of gears should I be swapping my axle out for?

All the 8.8 LSD diffs offered OEM were not Torsen type. Only a fraction had the (Torsen) R7 larger housing axle code.

Id definitely go with 4.56s, I put 30s on my 2010 2.3 and had it regeared to 4.10s.. and while it brought back all the mustard lost from the bigger tires it would of been nice to have a little more gear. That 2.3 made nearly 40% more hp and tq than your motor too.. so considering your moving to a much taller and heavier set of boots.. 4.56s would definitely be the way.

Most people don't notice when they have problems because they just wear out and work like an open differential, even when brand new they don't work that well. I run 85w140 gear oil in the rear axle and don't even hear my lock right.
My customers noticed if they started getting stuck in snow or mud, NH has winter and March is mud season.

The one in my Explorer worked fairly reasonably then I started hearing a clicking noise, pulled the cover and the spiders were destroyed... not as destroyed as when it lost rear drive when I got it but still...
