how little tread depth before they won't mount it

I have some spare rims that are 10 inches wide and I have some tires that are 10.5 wide. They have id say a 1/4 inch of tread on them. Will they mount them for me? These are only gonna be used as rollers.

Did the penny test. The tread is equal to or greater than the dudes head.

Guess I answered my own question. To the top of Lincolns head is 1/16th of an inch. Site says legally your good if its to the top of his head. Only thing i dont know about is the width. I know there not supposed to be mounted that close. But I've heard of some that do

2/32" is the point where tires are required. there are wear bars on every d.o.t. legal tire that are at that point.

Wasn't aware that's what those were for. I'm really only concerned of one tire which is above that wear bar. Oddly the other tires have twice as much Tread and are fflush with the wear bar.

And yes 3 of them are one kind of tire and the other is a different brand.

Lemme tell ya , the legal limit will slide on wet pavement. An unloaded pick up needs the stickiest tires you can get.

A lot of newer tires are getting wear bars that are thicker than 2/32. In PA the official inspection law is two consecutive treads of 2/32 or the wear bars, which ever is lower.

As for minimum to get them mounted, that all depends on the shop. I once told one of our broke customers that he desperately needed tires. He brought us some new to him junk yard tires to put on. I objected to the boss saying that the ones he brought us were worse than the ones he already had, but was told to put them on anyway.

I did note my objections in writing. If you tell the shop that you just need them for rollers to push it around the yard or something you could probably get them to mount Mexican racing slicks as long as you pay.

if you have to ask, find better tires in most situations.

for rollers, just mount them yourself if you can't find a shop that'll do it....

Most of the time the shop is more concerned at the age of the tire. Had a "new" never on the road tire that was dated 2006. Franchise tire shop would not mount due to age. Took it to a used tire place and they mounted no problem. I think the law at least here in Cali is 5 years.

Call a tire store and ask them, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to take your money if you tell them you just need them for rollers.

Yep......been there.....ditched that! Gotta be real careful on wet pavement....and that's still no guarantee!

The tires that are on the truck now. ... in the rain I can spin them up hill in 4th. Can't get much worse than that

Alot of wrecking yards around here have a tire machine. We also have alot of used tire stores you can get some descent tires for cheap mounted and balanced. You need to match tire size for a transaxle or differentials.

^^^Here, it is the same issue. No tire shop (even used) will mount a tire that is over 6 years old. The date is on the back of the sidewall. Once thay see the date they say..'NO'. Keeps them from getting sued!!
