How hard can it be?

Actually installing the engine is one thing, making everything work right is another.
Do you have to pass emissions where you live? Do you want to go fuel injected or just drop a carb'd 289 in?
Give us all the details and the questions you need answered... we will help.

68 289- 195hp/288ftlb. Grantd those are SAE gross. A 4.0 might be close under SAE net.

As far as the 2.9...its only the best engine ever dropped between a set of fenders. It has mythical, chuck norris like properties that make it inpervious to abuse and capable of ridiculious, herculeon feats of strength.

Wow, a two page introductory post! This is getting serious, hahaha

Don't listen to Dirtman.

Actual photo of the first 2.9 ever built.

Is that because it died? Or is god saving humanity from it? :icon_confused:

Let me fix that.

How hard can it be I'd guess comes down to how hard are those bolts to twist, and how well can you put them back together.
I've been in a lot of fields sir, including a cottonfield when I was 5 (made 35 cents that day, enough to pay my own way into a movie theater to see the first showing of Pinochio , and buy a ten cent coke) and it always comes down to what can you do, how well can you do it, and how badly do you want to

Youre swapping in a 4bt. Therefore your opinion is invalid. Let us know though how long till that bread delivering smoke machine rattles your teeth loose though will ya?:ROFLMAO:

It's certainly doable... 289 with some money invested... carb'd… C4 and a gear... a handful of autometer gauges... make it stick and it would be fun to rip around town on a Saturday night. Wouldn't be a daily driver but a cool cruise night toy.

As snoranger said... details.

I sold that Explorer and bought my daughter a side by side (she keeps saying it's hers. She's 9, who am I to say no and crush her dreams.)... but I still have the bread delivering smoke machine.

I thought about coming to the 20th anniversary and bringing this thing (my 4/5 drop Ranger isn't very off-road friendly), but the place doesn't allow them.
