How does 4.0L SOHC compare to 3.0L Vulcan?...

The 4.0 SOHC is a great reliable engine, but if you're satisfied with 3.0, it may be better to go with it, since the gas mileage is usually significantly better. I've never driven a 3.0, but I'm very satisfied with the power of my 4.0 SOHC. I've hauled about 1300 lbs in the bed a few times, and it still accelerated just as easily as always. I didn't even notice all that weight was there.

MUCH more important than the engine choice is appropriate gearing.

Ford likes to put too-high gears in the rear end. Insist on at least 3.73.

And the auto transmissions SUCK. All of them (though some more than others).

If you get a 3.0, a 5speed and at least 3.73 if not 4.10's are best. You'll have better mileage and power. The 3.0 is worthless with an auto behind it.

Yup, the OHV's were also outta Germany. They all got there unquie ping and rattle it seems like. Probably replace my rods and lifters soon. They got the crappiest oil circulation up there not to mention how much of a peice of crap the oil pressure sending units on those engines are.

Well THAT'S not exactly a vote of confidence in the long and hassle-free life of the engine... though he doesn't say how many miles on his valvetrain.

I got 78,203.5 miles on her as of tonight and there has been no vavletrain overhauls done on it. They're great engines but thats just the nature of the beast when it comes to the OHV's. The 4.0 OHV have been known to last well over 200,000 miles. Heck, one of my step dads buds sold his 4.0 Ranger to a co-worker and they just started to complain about the brakes at 347,000 miles and he sold it to them at 210,000 miles!
