How do I pull codes?

This may be a newbie question but how do i read my engines computer? ive been searching for a while now and still have not gotten any answers.

were in the world is the diagnostic connector? is it right under the steering culum? do i have to remove the panel under the steering colum?

mines under the hood pretty much just sitting on top of the drivers side fender well. it looks like the drawing.

mines a 92 and the connector is sitting on the pass side by the fuse box. 30 bux at advanced auto parts for a obd1 tester.
