hot hubs

ok so i finished up the axle swap today, tooker for a spin and aside from the alignment being off she ran great, popped her in 4x4 then 4 low drove for a block then parked to unlock hubs, and the suckers were burning hot, too hot to touch, any explination of this? maybe i got the bearings (preload) in too tight?

it might be because the hubs are not ment to be drivin on tar. correct me if im wrong

well i wasnt racing around like a bat out of hell... im talking 10 mph max... for a block... i know i put it back togther in a hurry and forgot to tourque the bearing nuts... so im guessing thats where i went wrong. i just did it snug and less then a quarter past.... enough to fit the spacer between the two nuts on..

When my rearend went out I dorve around in 4 hi for months and my hubs never got that hot. However I dont recomend doing that.

could be preload, but since i replaced my bearings and preloaded them correctly the hubs still get hott.. just depends on ur braking i guess, just jack up each wheel grab it by the top and if it shimmys back and forth just a "little" then ur fine.. but if theres no play at all then you may want to re tighten them

sounds good ill check that out tommrow... im hoping the chilton manual has the specs on it... im thinking i just got tired, in a hurry and was making mistakes.. im just paranoid about them, i realy dont want to blow out one of the new warns haha

Anytime I thought I had a wheelbearing going I'd feel the hub. If it was hot, it was a sure sign the wheelbearing was going bad.

well... i dident use any bearings from the new axle. i used the origonal ones from my truck as i knew the condtion of them, they were all replaced when i installed the hubs (also transfered the spindles to the new axle) .. i checked the bearing specs and it calls for 35ft/lbs im positive i went past that .. prolly in the 40-50 range... ill just have to go retourq the nuts to get the correct preload and see if that makes a difference..

After my 44 swap, my hubs get wicked hot, but I'm also using shitty brakes to stop heavy tires.

Did you repack the bearings?

yeah, i took quite a bit of time to clean out as much of the old grease as possible and packed them with fresh grease from the store... so they should be in great working order again...

35 ft lbs is wayy to much, The spec is about 16 INCH lbs, just hand tight.

really? wow... chillton is wrong? ha ha ha i could see hand tight, makes allot more sence.. simply because it has the second outer nut to keep it from un threading, i know though when i removed them from the old d35 on my truck to start the inner nut was more then hand tight though maybe 20 to 35 ft/lbs snug but not crazy tight... and they never got red hot to the touch or a noticible amount of heat anyway...

The Chiltons is kinda correct.

You torque it to 35ft lbs to SEAT the bearing, and then back it off 1/4 turn.

Then re-torque to 16 inch lbs.

If you're running bigger tires, a little more might be needed.

ahhhhh ok that made it click for me, i dont think it said anything about backing it out 1/4 turn... well this thread has proved to be very intresting but i think i got enough in my head to giver another shot... ill update this after i get my hands dirty to see if it did the trick.. thanks guys!

ok, it was the preload, retourqed the nuts and the heat dissipeared.. =] thanks jim for that hint on bad wheelbarings, il have to keep that in mind, good advice!
