Hi everyone

So yesturday my battery was dead because i had left my lights on. I had to go to work so i asked my step brother to go get our jump box and get my truck started while i gathered my tools for work. He reversed the cables on the jump box and said there was a little puff of smoke when he connected them. I was pissed! Hes no smarter then a bag of rocks. But anyways since then ive been trying to find the master fuse on the fuse box in the engine compartment to see if it blew that, because now my truck wont start. All it does is crank. Hopefully it didnt fry the ecu. I have an 2001 ranger edge 4.0

Please help me out with any info based on where the fuse would be.

Not sure of where it's located on an 01. It is usually easy to find based on size. My 97 was in front of the battery and hanging down a bit. Those maxi fuses are huge so should be easy to find and is probably just hiding somewhere. As for stuff being fried, I don't think on an 01 it would crank if that were fried because it only cranks when the computer is working. However i would assume your alternator is probably fried and possibly your battery.

Yes, alternator fuse/fusible link probably went up in smoke

maybe a few fuses in the engine power box

follow the red charge wire down from the battery the fuse link is grey, then follow the altenater regulater wire back to the battery you will find its also blown, open the box under the hood check every thing there,

Then go kick your step brother in the nuts.

Now Now! This is an opportunity for one of those teachable moments. After that, then kick him!

I checked all fuses in engine compartment there all good. Replaced battery. The truck still turns over but wont fire.

If you have a moment, might want to take the alternator and have it tested. Don't really know much about this engine yet, some may have a tach sensor they want to see a reading on. Go through and see if any wires got melty or touched ground, maybe check to make sure a fuel pump didn't burn out?

Get a 12v test light or volt meter.
Turn on key
Listen for fuel pump to come on for 2 seconds
Remove easy to get to fuel injector wire and test for 12v on 1 of the wires

If no fuel pump or 12v at injectors then replace EEC relay

I checked volatge at one of the injectors and i have 12.7 volts. Then i listened for the fuel pump and it did come on for two seconds so i do have fuel

And i have 12.7 volts to the coil pack just checked that.

Checked voltage at injector wire i had 12.7 volts, listened for fuel pump prime and it did for 2 seconds. Then checked voltage at coil pack it had 12.7 volts. If it has fuel and spark what could it be?

Pull a sparkplug out, put it back in it's wire, ground the threads, and watch for spark as someone cranks it over. Just because you have 12 V at the coil doesn't mean it is firing. If its not you can check the remaining three wires in the coil connector by using a test light- hook one end to 12v+ and the other to one of the three wires (each wire fires two plugs on the coil by grounding them) Have someone crank it over the test light should blink. If it isn't check the crank angle sensor and PCM fuse. If the PCM is fried ECMtogo.com can rebuild it in a day if u overnight it both ways. There is an ohm test for the crank angle sensor to test it as well.

So i went a little farther i pulled a spark plug to make sure i had spark. I do have have spark. The spark plug is dry and does not smell like fuel. Theres power to the injectors. I then sprayed starter fluid in the intake and the motor didnt even hicup or anything. This is all kind of strange if anyone has any idea what this could be id much appreciate it.
