Am I the only one who just uses wooden blocks instead of jackstands? I have seen jackstands crumple, but wood blocks seem to take more abuse, and they are more stable.

Of course, I use a chain instead of a nylon strap for vehicle recovery, so what do I know?

I use wood blocks.
I have to agree, they do seem a lot more stable than jackstands. They also can't sink into an asphalt driveway and fall over if left with weight on them for awhile. Jackstands seem to work best if you're on a hard concrete garage floor.

The wood blocks I have are a mix of 4x6s, 6x6s and 8x6s, about 4' long, stacked double-wide. They cannot crush as long as you support the vehicle by the bottom of the frame (no sharp bracket edges to cut or gouge into them), I've used them under our Winnebago too.
I gotta say there's no teeth on them to shear off either, thats way fawkin scary shit right there


Something that should NEVER EVER be used however are bricks or cinder blocks, as they can easily crumble with weight on them.

im just lucky i was able to walk around without worries later that day, just a nasry squish, i must be blessed, if it was a 1/2" farther out, i woulda needed major surgery

My eyes got big when I read that. I might be looking into some good 'ol made in the USA jackstand pretty soon. Glad you're still walkin.

Thats why I like my jackstands. they're basically shortened diesel locomotive stands my dad made when he worked for the railroad as a shop supervisor. I think there 3/8" steel tubing on a large base and supported with 3 gussets and locked at the height you want by a 1/2" pin. If you guys want pics, I can get them.
