Holley Carb Stumble

distributor passed the suck test and appears to be working... the distributor is a factory replacement.. the brand name written on it is "GAY" lol. Timing, and balancer appears on target as well.

What application is your 302 from and what application is the distributor for ?

engine was an EFI from a 90 mustang gt. When I converted to the carbed setup, I switched to a distributor from an 85 mustang gt 5spd i believe. I had to use the cap adapter on this distributor for it to work.

To me, it seems like the lack of power is on the air/fuel end of things. It seems to run great around town, just cant light up the tires from a dead stop. Gas pedal is super responsive... It may be a matter of me better tuning the carb.. the youtube videos and internet seem to spell it out pretty clearly so I feel I have covered the basics.:dunno:

Ok the distributor is the correct one for the application. When you try to light up the tires from a dead stop, are you power braking it, or just nailing the go pedal by itself ? Just nailing the pedal alone won't always result in tire spin powerbraking it along with the gas should. If that doesn't do it, I would try more timing. When you sawpped the cam, how did you align the timing marks when you installed the timing chain and gears ?

well I've tried both and yes I can sometimes get the tires to spin slowly if I try to power brake. Just nailing the gas it takes off without spinning at all.. Sometimes it wont even powerbrake and it just strains when I try... The cam was installed straight up. I bumped the timing a few more degrees to see what would happen and no improvement. I've read the explorer camshaft to be a decent cam, but maybe it sacrafices some low end?

It gives up nothing on bottom. Mine pulled from idle to 6000 rpms, used with a set of 1.7 Cobra rockers. Here was my combo: Explorer short block and cam, ported E7TE heads (done by me), basically the only thing I did was open up the exhaust sides of the heads and bowl blend the area under the valves on all. Intake was a Ford A321 (same as the old 60's Cobra high rise dual plane) Holley 570 Street Avenger, points distributor with a Pertronix II, fired by a Mallory Promaster coil, timing set at around 14-16* BTC. I ran this with a Toploader 4 speed for years, then swapped in a C-4 with a TCI street fighter converter. Rear was an 8.8, 3.73 tracloc with 275/60/15 Cooper Cobra's. Oh, and tri-y headers and full duals with a 4' x 12" equalizer chamber forward of the turbo mufflers
