high beam causes lights to go out

I just bought this 97 ranger, and like the title say's, when I push the turn signal lever to activate the high beams, the lights go totally out, then come back on when it goes back to low beam. I have noticed that the turn signal lever feels kinda loose and sloppy, could this be part of the problem?

any input on what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated... oh, I have already replaced the bulbs...

probably a switch, or a relay if there is one.

I had the same thing on an '83 full size Bronco, it was the high beam switch on the floor.

Pull the bulbs and check the sockets for power at the low and high beam points; if you have power at the two points check the bulbs for continuity.

If you have power and the bulbs are good the next sep is to check the relays, which one I do not know for sure off the top of the head.

How are the low beans, are they bright, not so bright ?
Double check the ground wire for the headlight assembles (both of them), just a good measure.

If there is power, the grounds are good and the relay work, then you will need to take this up a notch and check out the switch assembly in the steering column.

It is an easy thing to get at, the only problem is the schematics and which wires.
This Module controls high/low beam, directionals, flashers and wiper systems and all the wiring in one large connector.
My unit had a pin pulled out and a main connector clip broken and it caused me a lot of trouble for a while.
The pin device that holds the pin in the connector had broken and caused this parking lights to be intermittent; how the connector clip broke is beyond me but all part of the overall problem.
I secured the pin using silicone and the connector using ty-wraps; there was enough room even though it is a tight fit.

From here check for power in and out, if all is well you will need to improvise as needed.

i had the exact same problem yesterday, turns out it was the fuse. long story but we accidently removed it earlier because i blew another one. grabbed a new fuse popped it in and everything worked fine. If your truck is the same as mine its fuse slot 37 i believe or it should be in your manual

There is a separate fuse for low and high beams. Look in your owners manual for the location. Good luck!
