Hey guys need some help

I gotta agree with these people about subaru. You can find them dirt cheap, because theyre not honda or toyota, you cant kill them because theyre built like honda and toyota, they get awesome mileage, you get the benefit of awd on the highest trim package, but I would stay away from outbacks. try legacies or imprezzas. Try to break it down this way, bear with me on this one

Honda= Higher insurance rates since everybody has to spend $10,000 on a civic just to make it do what a mustang will do out of the box

Toyota= Premium price tag, Crappy a/c systems, less mileage than honda

Nissan= maybe its just me, but every single Nissan ive ever owned (3) spun a rod bearing above 200k. I never drove them hard, it was just the ol pump wearing out, and they dont have o/p gauges

Mazda= Probably too sports oriented for her, harsh ride, weak brakes

Subaru= Differential problems, wont hold value because its not a toyota or honda

GM= too generic inside and out. BORING BORING BORING and unsafe to boot

Chrysler= Do they even exist anymore?

Ford= Good stuff, but (Gonna get kicked out of the forum for posting this) They dont seem to want to put alot of power under the hood, and still dont get that japanese car mileage.

KIA= Cheap, 2 year old models can be had for under 4k but you get what you pay for

And that goes for everything man, you get what you pay for so be wary of anything fishy. I know this is just a list of cons, but its based on factual problems and not opinionated (i hope.) You can do your own list of what you do like about these brands, as ultimately it boils down to what you and your girl like and dont like. Hope this helped man, and glad to hear everyone was ok

Or you could look at some VWs and Volvos. Problem is, theyre pretty pricey. however used examples can be found for a reasonable price with less than 100k. I think vw may even have an awd car

Mid 90's Nissan Maximas and Altimas...Ive owned 3 Altimas and 2 maximas...sold one altima and one maxima...but the ones I ran into the ground...

93 altima - 188K when it caught fire...but that was my fault
95 altima - 219K before the engine stopped...it started leaking oil at 190k
91 maxima - 201k before it was undrivable...the engine was acting funky.

Never had any trans problems or anything that would cost more than $300 go wrong except the engine at mileage above. Bought all of them with over 100k miles, all less than $2000

Problem is, if she were to get a Subaru she would want the outback so she can have the extra space and leather. Honda insurance seemed reasonable, it actually would have cost half to insure her Honda as opposed to what its costing me to insure my Ranger. The Accord is what she wants, but I am really concerned about the automatic transmission failures (it was enough of an issue that Honda issued a 7 year 100,000 mile warranty on them). She says she wouldn't mind a stick-shift accord, but I'd be willing to bet she'd like to avoid it if she can.

What's the deal with reliability on the VWs? I've met perhaps two people who swear by them, and they all swear by older VWs or the TDI VWs. Everybody else seems to swear at them. She really likes the Jetta, Passat, Golf, I'm just concerned about the possibility of an electrical/mechanical nightmare.

Well they are exteremely reliable except the 95-2000 manuals are weak. They have a tendency to bust reverse gear. The tdis get 50 mpg and you can get awd with them. I havent heard too much about the electrical nightmare, and theyre fairly easy to work on because they dont have all the computers that their fellow german car brethren have. you know the ones that wont let you drive it until you change the oil abd so forth. Ive never owned one, but my ex girlfriend did and she got it with over 300k on the clock and she drove the dogshit out of it for 3 years until it crapped out. I think when it went to the shredder it had almost 375k on it.
