I have a 1985 ranger with a 2.8L. It ran like crap. After some investigating, I replaced the cracked heads. All gaskets new from heads up, and all torqued to spec's. Problem is it smokes worse than a BARROOM. The carb is new...holly 2 bbl with manual choke...recommended replacement part. Carb is jetted with "60", and idle air adjusted with vacuum gague. Valved were adjusted as was the timing. Did a compression test and all cylenders were between 100-120. Is this too low? I cant find recommended spec's for cylinder compression. Anyone know what the cylinders are supposed to hold?? Or any other suggestions???

^^^ that would helpfull if its blue smoke its coolant. if its pure white is oil

smoke is blueish, which means oil, but is also strong odor of gas. New plugs look wet and black, which could be both oil/gas.
Also, very poor power, need to ride clutch till it starts moving or will die

Sounds like it's running waay to rich. May want to double check your timing, fuel pressure, float level, and all.

100-120 is alot of compression, isnt it supposed to be around 80-90? I was thinking it is running rich or the rings are gone just based on the OP.

i think your wrong.

white smoke-coolent
blue-rings
grey-oil
black-fuel

your rights but what is blue smoke?

if his rings were gone he wouldn't have any compression or very low compression

Blue smoke is oil.

Oil must be getting into the cylinders some how, if you have good compression, most likely it's not getting in from the rings. I would guess valve stem seals or something with the head.
