help with gas guage/ sensor?

My gas gauge is not measuring the amount of fuel in my tank i cannot tell what my gas level is theres noway to tell how much is in the tank. What could be the problem. This is a 1998 ford ranger xlt. I also do not know the engine size how do you tell? I also have a few other questions. soon i plan on putting larger rims on my truck. It has small 14 in rims. Id like to know what rims are inter changable between rangers. And if i can just put the on with no problems.

If your gas gauge isn't working period (stuck on E) it's probably the sending unit... Mine is broken too, I just refill every ~250 miles or so...
 
well it bounces around. One day it will be on e or close the other it will be near the top then the middle. Its just not right its different everytime you start it up.
 
Not sure if your year has one - but it could be the slosh module. Mine is on the back side of the instrument cluster. This keeps the gauge needle steady. It could also be your pump,level, sending module that it is in the tank - all one piece.

It doesnt move like sloshing it moves like stays in one place then raises or drops its always different. How to i replace the sender unit if thats it.

There should be a sticker under the hood that will tell you what motor you have. All rbv's have the same bolt pattern so any should fit yours. Some jeep wheels will also fit.

The gauge on my Camaro does this also... If I'm going downhill it moves toward E, and uphill moves toward F...
 
It's either the gauge, the slosh module, the sender or connections.

The sender resistance is 145Ω full, 22Ω empty. If you have the instrument cluster out you can measure the resistance through the sender- usually a yellow/white wire. With an ohmmeter attached, rock the truck and watch the reading move as the fuel sloshes. If it doesn't, or the resistance is more than 145Ω, you have a sender or connection problem. This reading will be between the Y/W wire and ground.

If you have the means, the cluster can be tested on the bench. It can be powered up and a 100Ω or 200Ω pot can substitute for the sender to test the gauge and slosh module.
