help! was told not to put larger tires on!

Ok so I don't know where I should have placed this thread, and am a noobie when using search for this stupid question I have

I was told by the costco tire guys that i shouldn't put any tires larger then 3% from stock, with a 4x4 1999 Ranger XLT i have 235/75/15 i plan on buying a 3 lift that consists of torsion keys and add a leaf for cheap, and was hoping to put 33x10.5/15's on to add a little look to my truck

y would i be told not to get larger tires, i dont understand

Well, bigger tires affect your gas mileage and can turn your truck into a dog from trying to turn the larger meats. Your speedometer will also be off by putting bigger tires on. Those are some of the things that happen when putting larger tires on.

right that much i understand and am ok with, i heard some where about brakes...im 17 and get 14.5 mpg with a 3.0L, need to fix motor mounts, but if i shell out close to $900 id like to make sure my brakes dont give out which would make me put more money out in the long run

ive got a 94 3.0 and am running 235/70/R15s no problem been doing so for 3 years (20k miles) now.

I don't think you would have too big of an issue with brakes (just keep up maintenance). Sure your stopping distance will increase, but not dramatically.

don't listen to them, costco is ridiculous. I once tried to buy a single tire from them and they refused to sell me less than 4.

oh well on my 94 those where not stock lol. Im pretty sure it originally had 14s not 15s ill check tomorrow I know im not within factory specs cause wallmart wouldn't install my tires.. I had to have my bro take them to work and do it after hours.

hah, so if i got a torsion key from fat bobs it says i need a Ford Torsion Bar Unload Tool, and they will sell it to me for 107 bucks...that a little crazy priced id think...anyone know of a place near Omaha,NE i could find one for cheap??

I'm not too up on how much lift you get from new keys, but why not just crank your torsion bars?

hmmm... my 97 came from the dealership brand new with 265/75 R15's...(basically 31's) when my parents bought it brand new in 97.

granted, 97's are different in the front suspension and front hubs/axles. I have had absolutely no issues with brakes or stoping, and I get 19-21 mpg on thehighway. (4.0)

One thing that I do need to fix is teh ball joints. the front wheels are at a bit of a slant.

i currently have them cranked for about a 1 1/4" lift and it rides rough, the new keys add 3" of lift and then i could loosen my t-bars and have it ride alittle smoother

Yeah just to add to the thread subject... Larger tires reduce speedometer speed from actual speed, require more braking force to stop (faster brake wear, but nothing significant), ofcourse possible wheel well rubbing, and for every inch you add to a larger tire, you decrease torque output at the wheels (faster driveline wear, reduced towing capability). You can lose a lot of power with larger tires, hence guys "gearing down" there diffs to compensate. But 3% is almost nothing to worry about. 3% of a 29inch tire isn't even an inch difference. Don't listen to Cosco, listen to the guys at TRS...
