This came out of 97' explorer with a 4.0, I think it's 5r55e, but I just want some opinions. I don't have the truck to look at the door anymore, but I do have a VIN # if that helps.

Here are some pics:

Which 4.0?

There were 2 different 4.0 engines available in '97.

Was it bolted to the 4.0 OHV or the 4.0 SOHC?

I don't remember, I'll have to take a look when I get home. I was under the impression that there was only one 4.0 for that model yr?

Doesnt look like an A4LD from the OHV 4.0 rangers. As i dont see the vacuum modulator on the side of the trans.

Then it's a 5R55E.

If it was the OHV engine (steel valve covers) it would have been a 4R55E
until the end of 1997.

The 4.0 SOHC was introduced in 1997, but the 4.0OHV wasn't discontinued in the Explorer until the end of '00

do you have a link/picture to these valve covers? I just took a quick look at the covers, it seemed to have a large hump in the middle (one on each valve cover) so i'm assuming these are the cams?

The SOHC engine has bare cast aluminum valve covers.

The OHV engine has steel valve covers that are painted ford grey.

while both engines have plastic upper intake manifolds the LOWER intake
manifold on the OHV(pushrod) engine is cast aluminum, the SOHC engine
has a plastic lower intake manifold.

The Upper intake on the OHV is a single "Log" plenum.
The upper on the SOHC is a "split Log" with a large tube
that runs down each side.

An OHV(pushrod) vehicle will have an "X" as the 8th digit of the VIN
an SOHC 4.0 powered vehicle will have "E" as the 8th digit of the VIN.

Then it's definatly a 5R55E transmission, because to my knowledge the
SOHC's were never equipped with the 4R55E.
