Thanks for all your help.

Are you doing a stock swap or are to looking to make power? What year is it going in transmission etc?
This is for my 1996 Mazda B2300 SE Ext Cab, I would like more power (303 cam) with a T5 trans posi rear. I am wanting to do lots to truck: relocate battery to back under bed, move gas tank to rear and lower it a couple of inches. And I have no idea really what I'm doing. HA. This website helps out so much.

Those are gt40p heads... it's a late 97+ engine.

Yep, External egr pipe, single fuel line, 1999 or newer.

If you're looking to go manual trans, deleting PATS and the transmission would be part of the same custom tune so not a show stopper.

You will need to mod the truck's fuel system for the higher pressure needs of the later spec engine and injectors.

I have the B cam, proform 1.71 Roller Rockers, oem height trickflow lifters, trick flow stock length pushrods, trickflow valve springs (the kit). There was plenty of things I could have done with this engine but it had 130k on it so I figure dump a lil in it and run it as long as it can.

If you want power take those P heads and get a chevy exhaust valves put in, port and polish them, USE THE PROPER KEEPERS!!! or if its cheaper buy a good set of heads. Arp studs, roller rockers (scorpion, or proform or crane) new lifters, the trick flow valve spring kit,

4 bar heads.....pisser.

Cleaned the top of the engine and underneath all the grease is white paint. That's not normal right? Paint goes all the way under like it was taken off and painted. This engine will probably not go into my truck. I will still look for a 96 or 97. Going to try and look for some photos of 96 and 97 engines that would help me identify them better. Thanks for all your help.

See the 4 bars cast into the head, next to the freeze out plug. That's means it's a gt40p head. (Late 97+).
If it has 3 bars it's a gt40 head. They were used on 96-97 engines.

It's that simple.

Sir, you are my favorite person for today. Thanks so much, everyone.

So I can still use this engine in my 96 and don't really have to worry about finding a 96 since I'm going to be rebuilding it with a 303 cam and going T5?

The big difference between them is the heads. The spark plug angle is different, which makes the exhaust manifolds different. As long as you have the right manifolds for the engine, you can put that enough in whatever you want.

that engine dont give a flying fat rats ass what cam or control system you use as long as it is matched.

the heads being p simply limit header options for EASE OF INSTALL AND MAINTENANCE..... but that is only a small matter....with basic work arounds......there are combustion variances but not enough to concern myself.
