heater/ac switch problem?

2002 base model 2.3l 5 sp. for no good reason the cabin air(in a/c mode) started to cycle between defrost, footwell and dash vents. do i need a new a/c selector switch or is some other part/system faulty? the a/c and fan continue to work during this recycle, which happens randomly every few minutes. not that i really care but something is definitely wrong and i am afraid i am wearing out the air diverter system.
