Headlight Switch Knob being a pain.

I know it should be a simple job, but I cannot figure it out! The knob will slide onto the rod, but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to make it stick! It’s a 1989 XLT Supercab, original headlight switch, new knob.

There should be a little clip inside the knob that latches to the rod. It may be that only one side is notched for the clip to grab into.
