head unit suggestions...

here is one that NO ONE SHOULD EVEN BOTHER WITH if you can find it. Before I got my ranger I had a 94 ford escort. The previous owner put a headunit in. The company's name was Pyle. Short for pyle of sh!t. I should have saved it for a photo for this thread. But lets just say it met its match on the interstate out the window :headbang:

I agree with all of the above especially that Pioneer is one of the best for the money. I bought a Pioneer hu out of a car in the junkyard that had the windshield completely busted out for who knows how long letting rain water in, and it worked for years until I sold the car I put it in... they seem pretty durable. I also put the one in my first car and at least 3 or 4 different cars over a period of around 10 years and it still worked perfect. I also agree the only thing a Jensen is good for is something to chock your wheels while you are working on your vehicle. I've seen ones that start skipping uncontrollably only a week after they're new. Sony isn't much better. I would like to add, that I bought a VR3 brand hu off Ebay for $25 and it has been awesome! It has a 3" lcd screen, plays DVD movies, CDs, MP3 CDs, USB flash drives, SD cards, and has a nice remote. It also has an A/V input on the front, but I don't have the right cable for it. The screen is small, but movies look great on it. It sounds as good or better than any other hu I've had. My only complaint is that the only way to see the clock is to keep pushing display as there is no way to keep it on the display.

My $.02,
Josh

Guess I'll be the odd man out here and say I HATE my Pioneer P5000UB. I'll go so far as to say it's the worst deck I have ever owned. Not only does it have the most annoying blue illumination, the controls feel cheap as hell. The faceplace is extremely flimsy and I am constantly moving the controls wrong or pressing buttons I don't intend to because the design is so poor. Maybe it's because it has a fold down face, who knows. All I know is I won't be buying another until they change the design. This deck is in my Merkur XR4Ti, but probably won't be in there for much longer.

I have an old Kenwood MASK deck in my Mustang and it's as solid as can be even with a motorized face. I have an older Alpine deck in my Ranger and if it weren't for the lack of modern amenities like bluetooth and ipod control, I'd continue to use it. I have a JVC Arsenal deck on the way to replace it. JVC is one of the few out there these days that still offers switchable illumination and I love that. Illumination is my biggest pet peeve on 90% of the decks on the market today. For some reason with all the great technology out there, manufacturers somehow took a giant step back when they went to non-switchable illumination that doesn't match but a handful of cars out on the road.

i do agree with you that the middle button on my pioneer is somewhat difficult to operate but honestly i dont hardly use it, i have the remote in reach at all times. but other than that i love my pioneer.

and i also agree with you on the illumination aspect. i would have considered many other headunits if i could have the option to change the color, i needed blue to match the gage cluster and under dash lights. only a few have the option, my friend for which this thread was started, has the pioneer unit i installed for him and it is the only pioneer that iv seen with the option to change the color of the illumination,

I have a JVC Arsenal KD-A615, excellent sound and features!! crutchfield is a great place to get it, comes with everything u could ask for for install.

it maybe a good headunit, and crutchfield is an excellent site. but i guarantee you paid way too much for it. crutchfield uses the msrp prices and rarely has any decent deals other, than like buy one get one free subs and such. crutchfield in my opinion is an excelltent research site, lots of great info but not where you want to buy stuff. Sonicelectronic.com is where i buy everything from. great prices and free shipping on most items. me and friends have not been disappointed yet.
