My buddy bought a older snap-on mig/tig MM250sl welder. He said I can use it all I want if I can figure out what's wrong with it. I know pretty much nothing about welder repair. So I need help.
It welds semi consistently at lower settings but once it gets to 5 on the power dial and 5.5 on the wire speed it starts surging real bad and has horrible penetration.
Also the gas keeps flowing whether your welding or not. I found a diagnostic on the web where someone said it's probably the solenoid, they stick when they get dirty.
So I'll be checking that out and trying to clean that.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Any one got a idea?

Gas flow sounds like the solenoid as stated. As for the welding part, could be the transformer starting to break down...

Hmm and I assume that's not replaceable huh?

Everything's replaceable, but at what point does it become no longer a good economical decision to do so. Again, I'm only guessing as I haven't diagnosed it, it could be something else. I'm only making suggestions on what I think it could be...

It could also be a dirty mig gun liner, the teflon liner gets real dirty over time and will need to be taken apart and cleaned and then get put back together. We used to run into this at work all the time and I was a maintenance welder in a steel mill for 25 years.

Try this, turn your wire speed all the way up, and run a foot or two or wire through it, not trying to weld at that speed, just free spool it. If its irratic, clean the liner and try it again...

Thank you for the info guys I really appreciate it! It's gonna be a few days until I can try cleaning the liner. A decent fire broke and I'll be here fighting it for a few.
