hatch wont open

I have 87 BII . The rear hatch handle spins 360. Wont open door. How do I do that to get at the latch for repair.

Take off the rear hatch panel from inside the car and once you get it off you'll see two rods, like a tailgate hatch. Push both of them towards eachother and it will pop open. What probably happend is the metal catch that the handle pushes on, has slipped past the plastic. Mine did the same thing so i just ran a screw beside the petal to keep it from slipping.
