Has anyone replaced the timing chain tensioners?

If so, what mileage did you change them at?

I have a set of Cloyes and trying to figure out when to do it.

I replaced mine at 70K on one truck. The other truck I bought with 200K on it and I changed them when I bought the truck.

Plan to do it when you have to change the oil anyway, since you have to drain the oil to take them off.


Used Cloyes on both I think both of them have at least 30K on the tensioners now w/o issue.



The 2003 is a stock engine, and it took about an hour. Had to pop the upper intake loose to get to the one on the front. Much easier then the suggestion of removing the thermostat housing. No messing with fluids.

The 2011 has a supercharger and it took about half hour to change them since I could get at the front one with out removing anything.

Recommend renewing the OilPressurized TimingTensioners every 8years\75kMiles.
Got into the habit of spraying a little CarbCleaner into the OilSupply galleys when I change these tensioners,
(believe this may help to clear out any old oil sludge),
then start & idle the engine for a 10~15min, checking for oil leaks. if no leaks & tensioners+guides sound ok, then change the Oil+Filter.

I don't know why, but I was thinking that a ton of oil would pour out when changing the bottom one. (Forgetting that most would be in the pan.)

I'm starting to over think this and wondering if I should also do a Marvel's Mystery Oil treatment too.

Or will that just cause more sludge?

I changed the first one at 100K miles and the second one at 250K miles. I always use OEM parts when I can, and OEM tensioners were available. Both times the old tensioner were still good.

I wouldn't really consider myself to be that competitive. In fact, I stopped playing school hockey after 8th grade because I knew the HS team coaching and overall atmosphere was more centered after wins than it was the FUN.. and that's why I played.


Burnouts however.... ha. I'll blow up my motor and burn down my house if that's what it takes to be victorious.
