Hard shift or clunk into reverse?...normal?

I had my trans rebuilt a few months ago, and although im not sure if this is new or not, but when shifting into reverse it seems to take a second to engage and shifts hard with a clunk. I've got a warranty on the trans refresh, but somehow I'm guessing this is going to be something not covered like the driveshaft. My truck is a 2001 V6,4.0L, 4x4 Xlt. 5 speed AUTO trans, i believe it is 5r55e I also get that clunk in the driveshaft when accellerating from coasting at a low speed, but was told that is just the way the rangers are. Is this hard reverse shift something I should get checked very soon? Thanks alot for your replies. :shok:

my guess is that the clunk with harsh engagement during shifts is the need to bleed the clutch. typical friction points are about 1/2 way up from the floor.

Dude....this is automatic trans.

Sounds like bad u-joints, possible slop in rear end gears, trans not rebuilt properly. Could be all or some of these. Prollyt the u-joints though.

Well, I don't know if our problem was the same ( this is my first ranger, recently bought one)... anyway when I shift into reverse ( I have a 3.0L manual transmission) I hear a hard shift or some clunk every time I shift it. I read the Ranger manual from the glove compartment and and found this out: For some people (I will limit to say naive) that might get into reverse after 5th gear (stup....) a sort of guard or prevention was created, a locking system, so you will hear this noise.
The manual said : BEFORE SHIFTING INTO REVERSE, FIRST ENGAGE FOURTH AND THEN SHIFT INTO REVERSE, THEN ACCELERATE.

He has an AUTOMATIC transmission.
 
oh, anyway It is true. Hey by the way, we have the same kind of truck. How do you check the transmission fluid on your 5 speed? I want to check the level
 
sound like your u joints in the drive shaft get under your truck and see if there is any play in your drive shaft
 
A delayed reverse engagement could be a pressure loss in the trans ,valve body or reverse clutches. The clunk is high EPC pressure due to above concern. Take it back to the Rebuilder.
