Gun experts/enthusiasts: ID these two guns for me?

I bought a tin of 22 BB caps for shooting pop cans in my fire place once, 2 shots and I had to stop..... too damn loud!

Were these the little-bitty short shells? They've always been pretty quiet in my rifles, but they do have a much louder "pop" in pistols.

BB caps

Yes, 1/4" shell with a 22 cal BB in it.
Shot them out of a revolver, much too loud, thought somebody might call the cops on me.

Yeah, in revolver they still do have a pretty good bang. Not only the shorter barrel, but there's the small gap between the cylinder and barrel. Even in an auto pistol they're a lot louder than in a rifle.

thanks for all the responses. any tips on how i should go about cleaning them up to eventually get them back into safe usable condition? i've no one to teach me this stuff, i wasn't brought up around guns, so i'm pretty much a noob. i have shot guns many times, and have been taught safety and operation related stuff, but never disassembly, cleaning etc.

i've relinquished control of the guns to my grandfather, who has a gun license, but isn't exactly very knowledgeable about restoration himself.

Wish I lived closer, I would tell you to bring them over and I could show you how. I wouldn't hesitate to pull them completely apart, clean and lube them up. But I'm no stranger to guns in general and have the cleaning tools, chemicals, and experience I need to do the job properly.
Overall they don't appear to be in really bad shape and guns made by those two manufacturers have an enviable reputation for long trouble free lifespans.
They probably just need a really good cleaning.
So if you do want to clean them up yourself the first thing your going to need is a couple of cleaning kits. One for the right gauge shotgun and the other for a .22 rifle.
Next thing is to see if you can find an owners manual for both on line. They are frequently posted by people on some of the gun related forums. Those will tell you how to take them down at least enough to get them cleaned up.
Like I said I would go a lot farther, but I have done quite a few.
In the end I still think it wouldn't all that bad an idea to have a competent gunsmith look them over, even do the cleaning. They usually don't charge all that much, but its well worth the cost in piece of mind to know that they are not going to hurt you, or anyone else when you try shooting them.

i have to say take them to a gun smith and have them look both of them over and clean them. if there is a problem the gun smith will find it. he should be able to give you positive ids on both.

I apologize for reviving a 10 month old thread.....
but that top pic is a mossberg 20 ga. model 185k
it has an adjustable choke and usually has a three round
magazine. As for restoration dont waste too much money on an
old bolt action mossberg, they dont command high prices.....
(under $200 dollars). If it was mine I would clean it up and
shoot it.

Please check the barrel or reciever for proper ammuntion!!!

Restore them 100%

so i'm looking for some identification of these 2 guns, like what model/brand are they?

top gun is large caliber unknown maker, bottom one is very tiny caliber- and its a winchester

any help is appreciated

Although these guns are not big money guns they do have sentimental value and if I found them under similar conditions/situations I would want to have them professionally restored including re-bluing, after all they were in the family and are old, I say if you have the money, have them restored to like new condition. How kewl what that be and I bet it won't break the bank:icon_thumby:

I agree with the reader who said it is a Mossberg, but it looks more like a 12 or 16 gauge to me, without something to compare it to - they made all the calibers including 410 in the bolt action. If I remember the clip only held two shells, not three. I had one but it disappeared when my Brother-in-law did.

That Winchester was copied by everyone else. I had a Stevens of the same model. Both guns deserve a good cleaning up and should be able to shoot today's ammunition. The Mossberg will not accept the longer 3" shot shells however. I didn't notice if anyone mentioned the fact it had sights. They did because the shotgun choke could be adjusted to have an Improved Cylinder. The gun was advertised for it's versatility, bird, ducks or deer. I shot all three with mine.
