Guess what happened again!

stop neutral dropping and trying to go from drive to reverse with out stopping. I used to neutral drop the 401 in my 73 waggy and go from drive to reverse like the general lee in a dukes episode ....... I went through 2 flex plates a month.

i don't neutral drop, i treat it properly.

Yeah, I guess he put it about right...

If you want to drive like you own a race car, buy a race car, not a 4000 pound explorer...

edit - 3600 pound b2....

see previous post.

My 3rd flexplate lasted 2 weeks...The spacer was chipped and wasn't centered on the crank and it failed...Luckily I was able to get it warrantied...

My dad had a 88 2.9 Ranger that went through 3 the same way, still cant figure out why either.

Check the endplay on the crankshaft as well, excessive end play in the crankshaft will tear a flexplate apart in short order.

the engine it was attached to isn't going back in, so if it happens again with the brand new (zero mile, reconditioned block with all new in box parts) engine, what should i look for at that point?

At that point, you might need to install a 1" diameter bolt under the throttle pedal...

bad torque converter/pump....out of balance.

its that or the crank spacer is wopped and/or it is being torqued improperly.

if the spacer is shitty you cant torque it right. is the spacer installed correctly?

i have seen different thickness spacers over the years.....dont remember the measurements but it was less then 1/8 in.

on edit...the torque converter snout and seat can be an issue as well.

i had the shop that put the new flywheel in replace the pump in the transmission, afterwards the TC wouldn't unlock for about a month, then it banged real loud and started locking and unlocking normally.

a few days later the center got ripped out of the flywheel and the engine came apart.

lovely.

sometimes the tc will actually take the motor out too.

at this point you may have a combination of factors.

at this point i've already paid for a new engine, brand new, it's getting put in. (the entire rotating assembly is done, pushrods are completely shot and the mains are spun like a friggin top)
getting a new flywheel, spacer, etc.

new TC.

transmission is getting rebuilt and the transfer case is getting the same treatment since it'll have to be taken off anyway.

if this keeps happening after this, i'm really at a loss, because i just don't see how it could keep happening after replacing everything.
