1999 ranger xlt 4x4 manual trans 160k miles on rig
my new used truck makes growling/humming noise at 10mph then increases as speed increases-under load or coasting in neutral-is not tires because i just put 4 new ones on today and no change-growling/hum will go away when i make a high speed sharp turn to the right 20+mph
sound is worst at 40 mph then as speed increases it is a droning hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm that fades into all the other road noise engine noise etc etc

rear and front pumpkin is cool to touch-cannot detect unbalanced d shaft-uv joints seem fine-transfer case is warm but exhaust pipe is just in front case -what am i missing?
some peeps with noises in the driveline please help:sad:

sounds like a bad front wheel bearing to me. jack up the wheels and see if there is any slop in the bearings

Tomorrow i will do that-thanks guys

oh btw-auto zone says i gotta buy the whole hub assembly if it is a wheel bearing 241 smackers!
i cant just pull the bearing outta the hub-any suggestions?????????

how much to replace with manual locker hubs? do you get a new bearing set with the new hubs????????????????

1999 ranger you have the fulltime hubs. There are no manual or auto hubs for that.

that is what i thought-it is a dial shift for 4x4-no way to lock hubs?

What tires did you have installed? Did you hear the growl before you had the tires installed of after? Some tires are very noisy and it could be the tires and that is nothing to worry about.

if you read in my original it was making the humming/vibration(growl above 30)noise before new tires and after new tires. and... it stops/ceases when i turn right at 15+ mph but returns when wheels are pointed straight

If your Ranger is model year 1998, 1999, 2000, and you have 4 wheel drive, you have vacuum hubs. Period. If your truck has 2 wheel ABS, only the rear will have an ABS sensor. If you have 4 wheel ABS the front and rear will have ABS sensors. If you have an electrical pigtail comming out of the backside of the front hubs, you have 4 wheel ABS. This ABS pigtail is in the same area as the vacuum supply line going into the backside of the hub.
The hub/bearing assymbly is causing the growling(the link you provided). The vacuum hubs are seperate, and only are responsible for locking and unlocking your front drive. The link I provided to you are an example of an aftermarket manual locking hub, which does away with the vacuum hubs. The hub/bearing is a seperate unit and needs to be repaired first.

If you are confused by this, PM me before you go buying anything and I will help you further.
