I've heard that when installing a no-slip in the rear 8.8 LS carrier that you can just grind down the stock cross pin instead of using the weaker notched one. anyone have some pics of their ground stock pin?

i think youre talking about putting in a 4.56 or lower gear. the pin shouldnt effect anything to do with the LS

Its the ring gear that needs grinding, not the crosspin.

Grind just a bit off the very tip of 1 or 2 gear teeth to let a solid pin slip past (the pinion never touches the very tips of the teeth anyway, strength will not be affected).

I have 4.88 gears so i have a notched crosspin now. can you grind the gear teeth with out taking them out? if so how do you suggest keeping the metal shavings out of the diff for the most part? any pics?

It is a very very tiny amount of material that needs to be removed from the gear teeth. You can do it with the gears installed in the truck, but i'd recommend pulling the bearing caps and removing the carrier and ring gear and doing it on the bench. I used a 3m sanding disc on my die grinder to do it.

I ground on my ring gear in the housing. I covered the whole diff with masking tape and only left the part I needed to grind exposed. I used a dremel with a sanding cylinder type thing. After you grind it slip that notched pin out, pull the spiders, put in the no slip and a full pin and you're good to go :icon_thumby:

EDIT: I forgot, depending on the style of notched pin you may be able to use it with the no slip. If it has the notch cut in the middle it will be ok, if it is the style that one half of the whole pin in notched it will not work properly because only one side of the pin will contact the drivers of the locker.
