In the morning when it's cold and I start the Range, directly after it fires up, there is a very distinct grinding sound. I don't think it'd be the starter, althought it could be, but it starts right up, I don't have to crank it at all. This only happens when it's cold though/the truck hasn't been running for quite a while (overnight). Sooo...not sure what it is. It is definately a sound that I could ignore, but I'm kind of a freak for when I hear noises and I shouldn't. A friend of mine said that maybe it could be the tranny/low pressure and low tranny fluid but I checked it and it's fine.

So in recap -

1. Grinding sound directly after start up
2. Only happens after it hasn't been ran for a while

Thanks everyone - I hope this is enough info.

Can you tell where its coming from?
And is it like a grinding betwenn metal or more like a knocking?

Im pretty sure I know the noise you speak of. For me it was the starter...check there.

It is coming from the engine bay. It is a different kind of grind....let's see (hard to describe noises on here). Not really metal on metal. More like a very rough scratching, but not a knocking either..it's odd. It could be the starter, but not sure. Thanks.

yup sticky bendicts... causes lag in the return of the starter gear resulting in that horrible scrapeing noinse. it used to make me cringe/ then i got a new starter!:yahoo:

i was thinking the same thing Branger. that happend to me and I don't know if this happend to you but it also wore out he bearing and tore the SH## out of my fly wheel gears. GET IT FIXED.!!!!!

Yeah I checked the bolts and they were all tight. That thing is definately wedged up in there though! Any tips on removing that the fastest/easiest/best way? Thanks I figure I'll just replace it, since I'm sure it is the original

Yeah mine did the same thing for 3 weeks...course that was before I randomly slung a rod haha. So as of now I don't have to worry bout it anymore...but I miss the truck :( lol It's just sitting in front of the house teasing me calling for the 302 :)
