Hey guys I got rear ended this morning, didnt call the police but I got his name, address, insurance, insurance policy number, and tag. He seemed really cool about it, he took the blame. I've already been in contact with him too, so at least i know he picks up his phone.

Anyways, he hit my rear bumper, put a deep dent in it with his tow hooks on his explorer. Yep, RBV to RBV accident...

Anyways, what does it take to remove the bumper, and what would be involved in starightening it up, it is pushed all the way in to the body :(

Im guessing something is bent...

In addition I may need a new bumper anyways. How much do the bumpers go for?

I'm considering doing the work myself, but if its too much trouble ill let one of my insurance's body shops do it.

Any and all comments are welcome. I'd like every bit of info I can take!!!

Thanks guys

Alex

Don`t touch anything until the ins. adjuster sees it. You did call his ins co.?
Rear bumpers are pretty cheap. He might have bent the frame.

Yeah i have to call the insurance's when i get home tonight. I haven't done anything yet.

The bumper's easy dude, like 4 bolts and the plug for the license plate light.

there are four 18mm bolts holding it to the frame. I'm a body specialist and agree with richland. Insurance adjuster will not like for you to touch anything. My aftermarket supplier has a bumpers ranging from 150-200, depending on details.

Don't you have to have a police report to make a claim?

I've heard as long as the other person is willing to take blame, then it should not be an issue.

Btw, has anyone else been rear ended? Did it do damage to the frame?

And fineline... do you normally see people come in with bent frames, or is the frame setup sturdy enough/is the bumper giving enough?

In my state, it didn't happen unless there is a police report. You may have let him off without paying.

Really? Thats ridiculous. Seems the police have better things to do than attend every single little fender bender...

the frame on our rangers actually are quite stout. the bumpers usually tend to fold straight down. if your frame is bent, your gonna see a change in the gap between your door and bed, or a jump or squat in either of your doors. good chance that your frame is ok.

Good news, I had a local mechanic take a good look and the frame is fine.

As you said fineline the bumper buckeled upward and in. It took the major part of the blow.

I am now considering leaving the insurances out of this one and calling him back to just give me the money for a new bumper.

Now to find where i can get a bumper... anyone have any ideas?

dude, i got nailed by some drunk bitch one night, bent my bumper a tad, but the frame is fine.....she was going pretty fast on an icy road too

and dont file this on your insurance. he hit you, it's his fault.....no reason to file a claim on your own insurance unless you have to.

Alright, now I'm thinking roll pan rear bumper. Might as well take advantage of me having to replace the thing anyways and install something with a little bit of a street look.

Let his insurance pay you what it would cost to have a shop fix the truck, that is fair! It's up to you what you do with the money, if you want to fix it yourself then cool, if you want to have a shop fix it thats cool too. Your time is no less valuable than a body man's, there is no reason you should feel bad about pocketing above and beyond what it costs to fix your truck if you do it yourself. If you want to be fair about it, get 3 estimates and average them out and request that amount from his insurance company.
