Just wanted to add some clarification, a snatch block doubles the pulling power, not just 2/3.
For winches, I have read good things about the Smittybilt XRC8 (8,000 pounder). It's fairly cheap, only about $300, and still has some quality behind it. It's a good winch for the occasional use. Now if you're going to be using the winch constantly, several times a week, with difficult pulls, you're going to want a Warn or Superwinch as others have said.
