I took the old 77 on a voyage from my house to the old house today and the float is sticking or something. Granted its sat for two years but that carbs never been quite right so i think come spring when i put it back into duty im just going to replace it.

Anyone got any insight on a good place to buy from?

77 what? If it's a Motorcraft 2150 they're easy to rebuild and pretty trouble free if you run a good fuel filter. Rebuilt carbs have always been a crap shoot.

IMO if you can't do it yourself get a new one.

You with a kit, can of carb cleaner, a screw stick and youtube could probably do better than most "professional" rebuilders.

Agreed. I sure wouldn't mind having a larger ultrasonic to toss in a full carb body though. Mine is big enough for motorcycle carbs but that's about the limit.

The biggest problem with remans is you don't know what it really came off, the rebuilder just knows what box he got it out of, not what it was on or what kind of problems it had. Napa took the random p/s pump I had as a core on the one I got for my truck, I don't even know what it came from and someone is going to get it as a rebuilt Ranger pump.

I bought a 5200 from Autoline. It was $200 or something and I could not get it to run right for the life of me. I tried everything I could think of, bought jets and kits, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled. Nothing worked. There was what looked like epoxy in the primary bore that I suspect was a throttle shaft clearance repair. I talked to a guy nearby that has a yard full of cars (and a shed full of carburetors). I bought one off him for $20 and spent $50 on a kit. It works far better.

One of my neighbors is a retired mechanic said he never trusts those commercial rebuilt carbs. He said people don't trade their cores in unless there's a problem, so you just inherit someone else's problem. I think he may be right.

In summary, if at all possible see if you can find something out of a junked car or local. I agree with 85_Ranger4x4 you could probably do a better job than them. You care about the outcome, not how many rebuilds you can churn out in a day.

Ive done it myself numerous times. But i feel this carb is just plain worn out. Which is why i asked. I might try rebuilding it one more time. Not sure yet.

Thats what im afraid of. The 351M/400 2bbls were jetted bigger then the windsor 2bbls although the two physically interchange. Im sure the rebuilders wouldnt know the difference.

I was thinking about just buying core and rebuilding that. Mines been rebuilt atleast 4 times just by me.

If the holes for the shafts are sloppy bore them out and press in bronze bushings, otherwise there really isn't much to wear out on a carb.

Ive never had much luck repairing throttle plate shafts

Then call these guys, they can fix you up:
Im not converting it to EFI. Nice try though.

EDIT...

Ok to be fair it crossed my mind. But im not coughing up that kind of money to not really gain anything over a good functioning 2150.

Anyone ever run the holley 500 2bbl? Id like to not screw with changing manifolds

But you don’t have a good functioning 2150... do you?
