I just placed an order for a new 2011 Ranger at my local dealer. I was looking for a simple, small truck and this is what's coming: Vista Blue regular cab XLT 4x2 with a 2.3l, 5-speed manual transmission. The only options are aluminum wheels and a drop-in bed liner.
I test drove a 2.3l automatic and while not fast, it did have enough power for what I need - I prefer a stick. I'll be using the truck for general utility hauling and towing a small sailboat (about 750 lbs, boat and trailer). I've got my fingers crossed that the Ford will suit my needs.
I currently own a beater, 1990 Dodge Dakota with an eight foot bed and beefy lumber rack that I bought two years ago for $500 (it had a piece of plexiglass duct taped to the drivers door to replace the broken window - replaced with a junk yard door). It's a great dump run truck, but its reliability is so-so, and I doubt if it'll pass next year's emissions test. Hence, the Ford.
