Gears to spin 33's

There is guys saying 4.88's for 33" rubber? I am planning to install 4.56s for 35" rubber! Whats up with that!?!?

Hell, I've got 4.88 's to install and I have 31' tire's !! Mind you I want 33 or 35's in the future and am sticking with a 4.0 L.

2400 RPM is very OK for a 302. It'll spin that all day with no complaints.

There is a dude in town who is selling his Explorer axles! (D35 and 8.8)
With:
4.88 gears
ARB in front
Spooled Rear
Recently replaced ujoints, ball joints, & bearings on the D35.

Asking $1500 obo.
Thoughts on this? (I obviously find it appealing, but I recently sunk money into my own D35 + 'jeep' hubs. I still just have my 7.5)

EDIT: I feel very foolish all the sudden. I was mis-informed about the overdrive ratio on my transmission. I was told 4th gear = 0.75. That is wrong. 4th in my AOD = 0.67. This makes a significant difference.

4.88's it will be for me.

Hope dude still has those axles for sale tomorrow!

We arrived at a price of $1400 for both axles.
So, I get a 'new to me' D35 (my current one become on my shelf parts), with 4.88 gears, and a ARB. And spare hubs.
A explorer 8.8 with 4.88 gears and spool.

I feel alright about this. I had to shell out $$$ to step up to 4.88 gears anyways. (not $1400, but I like this deal)

Decent deal. I know how much the gears cost and the ARB is not cheap. Plus now it's just a matter swapping the D35 and some minor fab work for the 8.8 . :icon_thumby:

Swap that spool out when you get it, it will be a mini-spool (mini-spools are multi-pieced garbage in c-clip axles), then stick some spiders in there & weld it (or get an Aussie for it).

I drove a truck with a 460 in it for years, and ive got to say, anything over 2200, it didnt appreciate that much, at least with the stock cam in it.

Does anybody know of a full spool for the 8.8? Why is this minispool such junk? So far it has stood up to a 4.0L and 36" rubber on the rig i'm getting axles from...

Also, I knew I saved that Lincoln axle for some reason... Could I just rob the spiders and cross pin out of that and then burn them together?

EDIT: I'm sorry huvik for the nasty thread jack.

Lincoln axle is 28 spline is it not? From what I understand the multi piece c-clip minispools tend to fatige because of the small amount of slop (I'm assuming) in the parts constantly rocking back and forth on one another. The basic design from what I remember is the 2 side "gears" each have a large notch missing so it forms "square" hole between the 2 side gears in which a rectangular pin is inserted in the hole formed by the 2 side gears notches and then the crosspin runs inside the rectangle pin. Not sure how well I explained it. I dont think full spools are possible on c-slip axles, you probably could however weld up the minispool kind of like you would weld up the spiders.
EDIT: Heres a mini spool, it's actually 2 small squares insertered, not a large rectangular pin. From the pictures I've seen before it appears the squares like to round over and bend the side gears and deform them.

Yep, too many pieces in there, it's sloppy, it fatigues and then finally disintegrates. There are only two "edges" in that whole mess that drives each side, unlike a Lockright or similar that has what... (I'm guessing) 20 maybe (one on each locking tooth)?

Full spools are more than possible to make for c-clip axles, but everyone that makes them mistakenly seem to think there wouldn't be any demand for them though (c-clip axle retention is banned in drag racing). There are far more people out there that want a spool than drag racers.

Just weld it. Much cheaper than a full spool anyway.
