gear oil?

Why did they separately recommend Mercon for the M5ODs, and Mercon V for the Autos for 11 years then if they're the same (if V supposedly replaces non-V)? Something is very weird here :icon_confused:

At first Mercon and Mercon V were different and non-interchangable, then Ford decided to re-formulate Mercon V so that it would be compatible with all regular Mercon applications. A lot of people don't want to use regular Mercon anymore since there are no standards/specifications the oil companies have to meet, since Ford doesn't license it anymore. I'm gonna start using Mercon V in my power steering system that originally called for Mercon.

They reformulated it, but aren't changing the name? Thats fawking stupid, if so... (yeah, lets just confuse the shit out of everyone then)

Why would the oil companies make something that doesn't meet established standards, whether "required" to or not (jeopardizing their name)? I can't see companies like Castrol and Valvoline cheaping out on something like this (after all, people still use their "Type-F" without any problems, which Ford completely obsoleted probably over a decade ago?)

Yea I know, I'd say it's still safe to use regular Mercon. I'm just switching to Mercon V in the power steering to sort of "upgrade" and I can get a full synthetic.

I finally got around to dumping my 235,000 trany and dif oil. About 100 miles with the new stuff and downshifts are MUCH quicker now. That old stuff was black and smelly, the tranny magnet plug had metalic slime on it 3/4" long. Nearly a quarter on a million miles will wear some of the sycros and gears down. The dif oil sure smelled rotten..almost like baby crap.
