gas tank capacity

well turns out when my gage reads E there is still alot of gas still left in the tank..big reserve? And i have been over filling it, thus why it drips gas.

ahh so then it be your sending unit or the float on that.

that could be it or the spot were the rod hits the contacts to send the sigel through the wire to the gauge could be damaged. my GFs Dakotas had the top part of that scorched/burnt and when ever she had over a half tank the gauge wouldnt read correctly

its a brand new rebuilt sending unit, everything on it is new. Im going to play with the float height one of these days..anyone got any more input? Thanks for all the help, yall. :yahoo:

And you didn't notice the fact that you filled it up from E and then only went about 115 miles before it went back to E?

Just because the sending unit is new doesn't mean that is the right one or a good one. When the float is all the way down it should be about 1 inch from the bottom of the tank. If checking the resistance of the sender it should be approx 155 ohms empty and 22.5 ohms full.
As far as fuel leaking when full it shouldn't unless it burps out the filler neck when filling. All tanks are designed with an air pocket at the top to allow for expansion of the fuel. If there are fuel stains on the tank you need to find the leak.
You said that the tank was reconditioned about 1 year ago. I have seen reconditioned tanks with liners that have separated and cause problems.

still confused. Tank was near empty today so i pumped 5 gallons into the tank. Then the pump shuts off and gas starts bubbling hardcore out the top of the tank (where the sending unit drops into the tank) How can this happen if the tank is only 1/3 full? Tank vent is clear and can hear tank breathing through the vent. Fuel filler neck is kinked in 2 spots (due to the body lift) Might have to take truck to the shop soon..
